SUMMARY:Redefining The Great Australian Dream
DESCRIPTION:Michelle Blakeley\, \nArchitect \nFounder and Chair “My Home” \n  \nOnce\, the Great (White) Australian Dream was believing that home ownership was an expression of success and security in life. For most Australians\, it was an attainable foundation of our individual and social wellbeing. Not anymore. \nToday’s reality is that not everyone in Australia will be in a financial position to ever own a home\, especially with the ever-expanding size of Australian houses and the ever-expanding cost. More and more Australians will continue to rent housing throughout their life. \nWhere did we go wrong? What is affordable housing? How do we make housing affordable? Michelle explores the need for a new national vision for housing. \nMany Rotarians will be familiar with “My Home” and Michelle’s work in delivering housing for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. This session delves into the many learnings of working in the social housing sector for over five years and how this has influenced her design of homes for private clients and the delivering of more affordable homes for Australians generally.

SUMMARY:Homeless Healthcare with Dr Andrew Davies
DESCRIPTION:HOMELESS? YOU’RE LIKELY TO DIE AT 50. \nThe average age of death for people who are homeless is 50 years\, contrasting with the general Australian population median age of 81.7 years: a 30 year gap in the median age of death. \nWhy? Locally\, nationally\, and internationally there is a strong evidence-base confirming that health issues are a cause of homelessness and that deteriorating health is a major factor which keeps people trapped in long-term homelessness. This can become a revolving hospital door experienced by many people who are homeless and reducing their life expectancy. People who are homeless are also likely to have multiple morbidities at once – that is multiple symptoms or conditions of disease or illness. \nHomeless Healthcare is the largest specialist homelessness primary care service in Australia\, providing mobile street services\, a drop-in clinic\, services to people recently housed and a respite centre for people who have recently been discharged from hospital. \nDr Andrew Davies is at the coalface of caring for people who are homeless and sees first-hand the reasons for such a low life expectancy amongst people who are homeless. \nHe will shed light on this shocking problem in our community and how we can do better in helping people live longer.

SUMMARY:Helping Our At-Risk Children with Earbus Foundation
DESCRIPTION:With Lara Shur\, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Earbus Foundation \nEarbus Foundation was created with a goal in mind – to reduce the incidence of middle ear disease (Otitis media) in Indigenous and at-risk children in Western Australia below the World Health Organisation benchmark of 4%. \nOn average Aboriginal children suffer from middle ear disease for 32 months of the first five years of life\, compared to three months for non-Indigenous children. While vaccination programs have been tried and prevention and awareness programs are in place\, middle ear disease continues to afflict Aboriginal children at a disproportionate rate. \nEarbus mobile ear health clinics offer a model of continuous care to Aboriginal children and young people in schools\, daycares\, kindergartens and playgroups\, providing comprehensive ear screening\, surveillance and treatment.  Clinicians visit locations across regional and remote WA in the Goldfields\, Esperance-Norseman\, Perth Metro\, Pilbara East\, Pilbara Central\, Pilbara South\, Peel and South West. Each location is visited up to 11 times a year. \nLara Shur has an undergraduate Honours degree in Speech & Hearing Therapy\, a Master’s degree in Audiology\, a Clinical Doctorate (Au.D) in Audiology and a Graduate Certificate in Business Management. She joined Earbus Foundation of WA as Director\, Clinical Services & Outcomes in 2013 before stepping into the CEO role in April of 2023. \nLara was previously Manager of Clinical Support WA & NT for the Department of Health & Ageing’s Office of Hearing Services. Before joining the Earbus Foundation\, Lara was responsible for running the newborn hearing screening program in WA’s private hospital sector. She also managed private audiology services and cochlear implant programs for children. \nLara was responsible for the design brief and roll-out of the Pilbara Earbus as well as the Perth South Metro Earbus and managed Perth East Metro and Bunbury Earbuses for 3 years prior to joining Earbus Foundation. She began her career in Audiology in South Africa\, reaching the position of Senior Audiologist and Speech Therapist at a large public hospital in Soweto. \n

SUMMARY:FROM BIKIES TO PRIME MINISTERS: 25 YEARS OF WHAT THE REPORTER SAW
DESCRIPTION:Breakfast\, 7.15am\, Wednesday 17th May \n  \nBen Harvey\, journalist \n  \nAs a crime journalist\, political editor\, business editor and now chief reporter\, The West Australian’s Ben Harvey hasn’t quite seen it all – but he’s been there for a lot of it. \nBen wrote his first new report in 1998\, bashing it out on an Olivetti typewriter. Five thousand news stories later (death-threats notwithstanding) he still loves his job. \nDuring that time\, Ben has been at the coal-face of massive change in the way media communicates news. \nHe has watched newsrooms evolve and was an unwitting witness to the Murdoch newspapers’  phone hacking scandal in Britain when he was working for the red-top tabloids of London. \nJoin Ben for an insider’s guide on how modern media works and how the profession of journalism has changed over the past three decades – mixed with some behind-the-scenes memories of the characters who drove key news events.

SUMMARY:The Race to Zero Emissions- Is It Achievable?
DESCRIPTION:Peter Fitzpatrick\, AO\, AM(Mil)\, JP\, FSAE\, GAICD \nThe Race to Zero Emissions- Is It Achievable? \nNet zero emissions is an overall balance between greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere and taken out of the atmosphere. These emissions trap heat in the atmosphere\, heating the planet for years and years and years resulting in climate change. \nThe end goal is to balance the scales again and restore the global climate to pre-climate change levels. To get there\, we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero then repair past harm by drawing down past emissions. \nThere is much debate whether we can ever hope to achieve Zero Emission. Peter Fitzpatrick will engage in this debate at our next City East Rotary breakfast. \nPeter is widely respected and recognized for his leadership of two peak bodies; as the Chief Executive Officer for the legal profession and the motor industry in Western Australia. Prior to this he had a distinguished 20 year military career. In 1997 he was a strategic adviser to the then Prime Minister John Howard. Since then\, Peter has been a leader in business and community as a board director\, mentor\, coach\, advisor and advocate across not-for-profit\, government and private sectors.

SUMMARY:Powering the Future: Will batteries or hydrogen prevail?
DESCRIPTION:Global climate change is currently impacting everyone. To reduce the impact\, many countries are turning to renewable energies to remove fossil fuels from the energy menu. While electricity can be generated from many sources including solar and wind\, storing this energy is a problem. Two options being actively explored include electrochemical batteries and hydrogen. Both have their pros and cons for various applications\, but the transport market is a formidable contest. \nDr Terry Humphries has been researching hydrogen at leading global universities for over 17 years and believes that hydrogen will be a leading energy storage solution for the future. Batteries have been used to store power for decades but hydrogen is rising to the challenge\, fast. The question is\, how close is the contest and what are the best ways of using both technologies? \nElectric cars are commonplace on the roads\, but many companies are now producing hydrogen cars. Australia is actively building charging stations for both technologies and so customers will soon be left with the dilemma of choice. \nTerry will provide an overview of hydrogen technologies and explore the playing field of hydrogen and electric vehicles. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Born Into Homelessness - A Too-Hidden Issue
DESCRIPTION:Imagine being pregnant and homeless. Imagine having a baby and trying to find somewhere safe to sleep at night. Imagine living with the fear of child removal because you have nowhere to live. \nWomen in our community are having to confront these realities every day. \n“How can this be happening in this day and age?” you might ask. “Why isn’t this tragedy more widely known by us all?”  “How can our resource-rich state allow this to happen?” “It’s Dickensian”. Unbelievable as it seems\, it is occurring on our doorstep. \nSo\, what can be done? \nProfessor Lisa Wood is a tireless advocate of research being relevant and useful to the real world. She is recognised nationally and internationally\, for her leadership in homelessness and public health. Reducing health and social inequalities lies at the heart of all her research. \nUnderlying her academic and research career is dedicated hands-on involvement in helping people who are homeless and collaborating closely with health and homelessness services. In 2017\, Lisa founded the Home2Health research team (based now at the University of Notre Dame)\, and leads its growing program of innovative multidisciplinary research and evaluation. \nWhen Lisa became aware of the acute but often hidden vulnerability of pregnant women who are homeless in WA\, she couldn’t ignore it. \nCome and hear more about this injustice\, and what needs to be done and how.

SUMMARY:Bouncing Back
DESCRIPTION:Kim Hughes is a former cricketer who played for Western Australia\, Natal and Australia. He captained Australia in 28 test matches between 1979 and 1984 before captaining a rebel Australian team in a tour of South Africa\, a country which at the time was subject to a sporting boycott opposing apartheid. \nA right-handed batsman\, Hughes was seen to possess an orthodox and attractive batting style. He was identified as a potential Test cricketer from an early age\, but his impetuous style of batting\, and personality clashes with influential teammates and opponents saw a later introduction to first class and Test cricket than anticipated. During the split between the establishment Australian Cricket Board and the breakaway World Series Cricket\, Hughes stayed with the establishment. \nHughes’ captaincy record with Australia was hindered by a succession of matches being played away from home (just eight of his 28 Tests while captain were played in Australia) and the necessity to rebuild an inexperienced team after the frequent absence\, and later the retirement\, of several senior players. This placed him under extreme pressure and finally resigned the captaincy. \nIn more recent years his drinking problems became well known but his strength in overcoming the problem is to be admired. He is bouncing back. \nFree parking – use the Hyatt’s underground parking (enter from Terrace Rd) and get your ticket validated during check in. \nImage of Kim Hughes adapted from Djanga under CC BY-SA 3.0\, Wikimedia Commons

SUMMARY:Western Australia - A Historical Boast
DESCRIPTION:Western Australians do not seem keen to boast about the history of their State. Yet few residents realise some of the oldest evidence of life and human endeavour is on their own doorsteps. \nStarting with some fossils in the Pilbara and some of the earliest evidence of Aboriginal communal living\, to the remains of a fort on the Abrolhos Islands\, Richard Offen’s talk will give a virtual tour of some of the places that give Western Australian a very special status in the world’s history. Add to this some of the early buildings of the Swan River Colony\, set up in 1829\, and Richard will comprehensively debunk the myth that Western Australia has no history or heritage! \nRichard Offen is the author of the Perth editions of “Then and Now” and “Lost Perth”\, but is perhaps best known for his history spot on 720 ABC Breakfast Show. Amongst many roles\, he has worked for the UK National Trust and was responsible for the Trust’s famous Neptune Coastline Campaign that raised over £28 million to buy and protect nearly one hundred miles of spectacular British coastline. \nFree parking – use the Hyatt’s underground parking (enter from Terrace Rd) and get your ticket validated during check in.
