SUMMARY:The Incredible Work of The Kimberley Dental Team
DESCRIPTION:Remember\, our meetings are for everyone\, not just Rotarians – come along\, network and learn something new! \nCity Rotary is pleased to showcase the Kimberley Dental Team program\, which was founded by club members Jan and John Owen in May 2009 as a result of their experience in Halls Creek seeing first hand the impact of no dental therapy service for a considerable time.  Many children suffered dental disease and pain. This afforded the opportunity for Jan and John to provide dental screening and dental health education  to the local school children during the week. \nWith their increasing awareness of the inequality of dental health care compared to that of metropolitan Perth\, Jan and John committed to the development of a volunteer team of dental health personnel\, the Kimberley Dental Team (KDT)\, to enhance current services and improve dental health literacy. The model used was initially inspired by the Filling the Gap volunteer program operating in North Queensland. \nAs Jan and John look to retirement\, a new generation is continuing the legacy of volunteer dentistry in regional and remote WA they started 15 years ago. \nIn 2021\, Jim commenced his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree with The University of Western Australia (UWA). \nBefore commencing and pursuing his dentistry studies\, Jim grew up on a small farm in Dalyup; 40km West of Esperance WA\, and previously worked full time as a Process Technician with First Quantum Minerals Ltd (FQM)\, a global copper and nickel mining company.  Jim then gained a Master’s degree with a specialisation in Business Information and Logistics Management & Employment Relations from UWA Business School. Upon graduating\, Jim received and accepted his first employment offer with RSM’s Assurance and Advisory division\, where he previously provided accounting and advisory services to firms in the mining and exploration & not-for-profit industries. \nJim continues to contribute to the culture of the UWA Doctor of Dental Medicine cohort with a strong community mindset and interests in most team sports\, outdoor recreational activities\, health\, pastoral care\, and mentoring. He is passionate about servicing the healthcare needs of rural and remote members of our community and prides himself on returning to rural and remote WA to practice dentistry.

SUMMARY:Kai Fella & City Rotary Club
DESCRIPTION:Kai-Fella is dedicated to addressing the growing mental health crisis and youth suicide in Western Australia. In 2016\, 20-year-old Kai Eardley took his own life. His loss\, and the profound impact on his family\, friends\, and community\, is sadly not an isolated event. Kai-Fella exists to honour Kai’s life by ending the silence\, stigma and growing rate of youth suicide. \nKai-Fella delivers early-intervention Workshops in schools and sports clubs across the state\, which challenge stereotypes\, strengthens relationships and culture and builds our youths capacity for courage. \nKai-Fella’s vision is that young people across WA are equipped with the ability to find their voice and be courageous during life’s most challenging moments. \nTheir Workshops focus on practical and solution-oriented skills which improve the way young people treat themselves\, each other and the people they care about. \nSpeakers \nClaire Eardley\, Founder & Director \nClaire is a mother of three boys and the owner of a local East Fremantle physiotherapy practice. In 2018\, Claire founded Kai-Fella after losing her middle son\, Kai\, to suicide in 2016\, with the goal of ensuring that no other Western Australian families must endure the same pain. During her time as Chair (2018–2023)\, the organisation funded over 650 workshops in 47 schools\, reaching more than 18\,000 young Western Australians through grassroots community funding. In 2022\, Claire was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to youth and the community. \nDavid Mundy\, Chair \nDavid is a father of three and a former Australian rules footballer who played 376 games for the Fremantle Football Club (FFC). In 2015\, he was named in the All-Australian team and captained FFC during the 2016 season. Following his retirement in 2022\, David joined 6PR’s commentary team and became the Principal of Gender & Equality at the Minderoo Foundation.
