“I want to die.”

Laura Benger  Director, Samaritans

Suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged between 15-24.

How can we help young people when they have thoughts of suicide?

The Luminos Project is WA’s first youth suicide sanctuary and opened its doors in October 2023 in Subiaco.  The short-term residential service provides 16 to 24-year-olds experiencing suicidal thoughts with a safe and evidence-based alternative to hospital emergency departments.

The fit-for-purpose sanctuary was designed in collaboration with young people, their families, and mental health experts, and is staffed by trained peer workers and volunteers and overseen by a qualified clinician, The Luminos Project provides trauma-informed, person-centred, non-medical support to young people in a home-like environment.

Laura Benger has held senior leadership positions across multiple industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, mental health and resources. However, she feels her greatest impact in helping and supporting people has been as a Director of Samaritans where she has been able to contribute to establishing the Luminos Project.

Laura will share the success story of the Luminos Project and the vital role it plays in our community.
