Connecting cricket to community

While training and playing cricket all year has its rewards, many of players have strong connections to their community via their grass roots or premier cricket clubs, along with volunteering.  Come along to learn how WACA players connect with community and what they learn in cricket to apply to their personal lives.

This panel-style discussion with three of the WACA’s rising stars in the sport is sure to be an enlightening way to start your morning and leave you inspired for the day ahead.

Moderated by Christina Matthews AM, one of Australia’s most prolific pioneers of the sport, we will be hearing from Mahli Beardman, Piepa Cleary, and Teneale Peschel.

Mahli Beardman is considered one of Australia’s most promising young fast bowlers. A Cowaramup local, Beardman earned his first rookie contract before the 2023-24 domestic season. Beardman’s considerable talent was especially evident during the 2024 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, where his incredible form earned him Player of the Match honours.  Beardman was a shock inclusion for Australia’s ODI series against England in 2024, rushing to the airport just hours after learning of his selection as a reserve pace bowler. The teenager signed a two-year Big Bash League deal with Perth Scorchers.

Piepa Cleary has quickly become the leader of the bowling attack as an all-rounder, being one of the more experienced members of the playing squad. She had a consistent 2023-24 season, playing every match and finishing with 12 wickets. Her consistent performances and her leadership skills make her well respected amongst her peers, receiving the Legacy Award for her ability to adhere to team values.

Teneale Peschel is among the most experienced players in the WA squad. The 31-year-old has become the leader of the WA bowling attack in recent years, with the right-arm swing bowler showcasing her skills with the new ball and at the end of the innings. She produced her best season at WNCL level in 2023-24, taking 10 wickets in eight matches, while restricting the opposition to just 3.74 runs per over off her bowling. Her leadership towards the younger players has grown significantly in recent years, passing on her knowledge to younger quicks Zoe Britcliffe and Chloe Ainsworth as they look to take the next step in their careers. Peschel will be hoping to take her game to new heights in 2024-25, as she continues to be a leader in WA’s evolving bowling group.
